Hoping that my "new" M3 will very soon rise from the ashes, I am out for some early Christmas shopping for my track car to be and stumbled on this:

Supersprint Race Muffler Group Buy

Now, I was not shopping for exhaust parts just yet, but this is a (top notch, right?) $2K muffler for $1250 shipped, so I am tempted..thats what you pay for used ones I think.

Now, I don't expect too much in hp gain from a muffler alone (? but hey please prove me wrong), but it's a start that also would shave off weight, as well as add some noise too, thus improving the ever important noise/$ ratio. cool

Any thoughts?

Any authorized Supersprint dealers around that can benefit from this somehow if I decide to go for it?

JJ- the SS race muffler is one of the best out there for our cars, in terms of quality, fitment, and sound. The only thing I would recommend is that you check one in person prior to making the decision, especially if you already have or are planning on running catless headers at some point.

Reasons are:
a) Sound is something subjective, people have different tastes
b) The setup will be extremely loud -and raspy- along with catless headers. You can always add cats in section 1 and bigger resonator in section 2. If it is for a track only or weekend car, then it will be sweet- otherwise, it will get loud pretty quickly. The system will sound very nice with the OEM US headers/cats.

I personally decided not to go with the SS race muffler, because I am running SS stepped headers and SS section 1 cats and the car is also my daily driver - I went with the El diablo muffler.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input George. This will be a dedicated track car but will be driven to the track initially, so loudness is not a big issue.

JJ,
We make our own, race proven and winning.
Pipe, muffler and headers if desired. A lot less $$$ and same or more hp gains, BADASS sound.
Call me.

Just wondering, would a track-only car really need a muffler? Why not save the money (and weight) and use it elsewhere? Aren't mufflers and cats strictly for noise and emissions reduction, only mandatory for street vehicles?

JJ,

I run a E46 330 with SS Sport exhaust header, resonator and muffler. I had the cats deleted (when they went bad) and its a every other daily driver. It is a great system and sounds good. Since I removed the cats it is slightly raspy only at 3000 but on start up and throughout the rest of the range it sounds glorious, especially at full throttle. BTW Turner Motorsports has the muffler on sale for $890.

I would see what Dave at TLM has. They are great guys and its good to support local business.

I hope this helps. Im planning to be at the Nov. NASA event at Homestead so if you want to hear it stand trackside!

Channing, thanks for the input and I agree that David knows his stuff, we are already talking. One of the reasons I posted this thread was to give the good people here a chance to showcase their stuff.

And well, the SS Race muffler for the M3 would still set me back just under $1800 at Turner.

As for running straight pipes, that may be as loud as it gets, like very very loud?

This is not on the top of my shopping list, and I don't have the $ to spend on sweet sound alone, as much as I may like it. I'm trying to figure out if this is something I might get down the line anyway...I guess I'll give you another call David wink But I may very well hold off on this.

A motor is nothing more than a glorified pump. Back preasure is a needed evil however if you are going to send out the exhaust manifold a larger qty of hot gasess than you need to open the pipe.

Look at youre long term intentions on the other side of the manifold the intake side and maybe inejctor side

One size fits all is okay but the best systems are always custom....... and if TLM is willing to work with you and build it That may be the way to go And if done right is less $$$

So when do we get pics

biggrin Maybe I should, and you are all right, David did give me some options that was way more tempting in price/performance only at the expense of some chrome finishing.

So when do we get pics

Maybe as early as tomorrow! If all goes well, I should have a brand spanking new Spec Stage 3 clutch put in tomorrow, together with some solid engine and tranny mounts. I'll post some pics! And hopefully I get to drive the car at last..
