Hi,
I am relatively new to the track day experience but am loving it more and more. I have tried a couple of internet searches and have not been able to find any useful data on an affordable lap timer. I have seen equipment like the Traqmate but that is a bit too advanced (read pricey) for my level of involvement at this time. Is there a device out there that will basically do nothing more than time laps? I am looking for something to help me judge my improvement from track day to track day. Right now I am estimating lap times by watching my GoPro videos and using a stop watch to get my splits but there must be a better way, LOL. Any input is greatly appreciated! Rad |

I actually use aLapRecorderHD on my Android phone. The app is like $5.00 and uses GPS tracking for speed, lap times, etc.
Also uses built in accelerometer for things like lat G's, braking, etc. QUITE the bargain although GPS cycling is slightly inferior to an externally mounted GPS system (ie. TRAQMATE or what Sean mentioned). You just have to find a strong interior windshield mount for your phone. Did I mention it also films at 720p? |

Great point Ramon. Several members, including me, use "Trackmaster", an application for the Android. Cost me $10, and yes it also records video! They have similar apps for the iPhone as well. All you need is a sturdy car cradle and you're ready to rock and roll.

Thanks Carlos and Ramon. Right now I unfortunately have a BlackBerry but the iPhone is in the future in 2012. I will go with the "Trackmaster" application when the time comes.

Going to try
https://market.androi... this at the next event. I have trackmaster but couldn't get it going...could never find GPS. Think I need to have a separate GPS in the car to get it going. |

If you mount well on the windshield you should be fine. I don't use a Bluetooth GPS with aLapRecorderHD. I also have TrackMaster but never liked the fact that you had to set your own lap markers and I used to have issues with that.

If you get an iPhone there's Harry's Laptimer Pro app ($14) and it records video and will overlay data like throttle, rpm's, speed, and has a ton of features to analyze your laps. Need to get a device like a Kiwi that plugs into OBD but it's easy and works great. I can post my video if interested. GL

Yeah when I looked into the other app, I found that it was Andriod only. I had seen the Harry's Laptimer for the iPhone but I thought it looked too good to be true. Some first-hand review would be appreciated. I would love to see the video. Can you integrate some GoPro video with the data? |
